Three staff members from Coleg Menai are still doing their bit to support those unfortunate enough to be ill at this time, by recording radio shows in their own living rooms, which are then broadcast throughout the wards of Ysbyty Gwynedd.
Yvonne Gallienne, Sarah Wynn Griffiths and Jan Davies have been volunteers at Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd for many years, and so know how comforting hearing a message from a loved one or a favourite tune can be. They are all staunch committee members and have been involved in programming from home and online streaming since the Covid-19 lockdown began.
We all present on Yr Awr Hapus and we each have an allocated evening. We talk about all kinds of different topics in between songs and, of course, we play requests for patients and people streaming our programme. Prior to lockdown, the studio was moved from the hospital, so we had to find a new way of working. We started recording our shows at home and the finished product was then coordinated and broadcast from our technician's home. It's proved very successful, and we're so glad to be able to continue supporting hospital patients and the community in this way.
As they are a registered charity, and therefore reliant on donations and fundraising to maintain the service, the Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd team recently organised a fundraising Facebook Festival called Gŵyl Corona Festival, which took place on their Facebook page. Many local bands and artists took part in the event, and all monies raised went to Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd and Awyr Las, the hospital's official charity.
Coleg Menai Student Enrichment Officer and volunteer, Sarah Wynn Griffiths said,
The response to the first Festival was fantastic, and we had over 26,000 views on Facebook. In fact, it was such a success that we are arranging another event on our Facebook page called Corona Xtra, which will take place on the 28th June from 8-11 pm. There will be more performances from KT Tunstall, and we'll also be joined by The Joy Formidable, and Richard and Adam from Britain's Got Talent, in addition to all our talented local artists and performers. It's going to be another night to remember!
The team's fundraising page is still accepting donations, and can be found here: www.gofundme.com/gwyl-corona-festival
Again, all funds raised will go to Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd and Awyr Las.
Patients and loved ones can contact Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd to make a request in a number of ways - through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or their website, or by email, phone or text.
