A teenage Coleg Llandrillo Hairdressing student recently won the silver medal at a nationally renowned professional hairdressing competition, which showcases and rewards the nation's best young stylists.

16-year-old Sophie Dingley from Rhyl, who is studying on the Hairdressing Level 2 Junior Stylist course at the college's Rhyl campus, was awarded second place in the 'Avant-garde' category at the North West regional heat of the 'Concept Hair Apprentice of the Year 2020' competition, which took place at Hugh Baird College in Liverpool. What makes her achievement all the more impressive is that Sophie only started her Hairdressing course at the college a few months ago.

The national competition is divided into six regional heats: South West, Wales, North East, North West, Midlands and South East. Sophie just missed out on a place in the grand final in London, as only the winners of each category in the regional heats will qualify.

In her first ever external competition, Sophie scooped the silver medal after a fierce battle against the fifteen other heat finalists. She only had a matter of hours to create her medal-winning creation (on the theme of 'Fire and Ice') on her model, Amelia-Lilly Zitiello.

Sophie, who is hoping to own her own salon in the future, said:

I was completed shocked, but really happy with the silver medal. I am thoroughly enjoying the first year of my course at Rhyl College; I have learnt so much in a relatively short time.

Sophie's tutor Liz Keogh said:

Sophie has worked so hard in her four months at college. This is a remarkable achievement and we are all so proud of her. She had a totally professional attitude during, and leading up to the competition.

This success follows on from Sophie's stellar performance at the recent Grŵp Llandrillo Menai cross-college hairdressing finals where she scooped a gold medal. Not one to rest on her laurels, Sophie will be competing next at the National Hairdressing Federation competition in March in Blackpool.
