Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's campuses were bustling with anticipation recently as the Student Union Charity Week initiative got under way.

Students from all 12 campuses organised a range of exciting events, raising hundreds of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process. The charity is the Grŵp's official charity for the 2018/19 academic year.

Doti Young, Coleg Llandrillo's higher education student union president, baked a range of delicious homemade cakes, as well as securing a donation of scrumptious cupcakes from Hoff Cakes in Abergele. The cake stand went down a storm, with all the cakes selling out in under an hour! She raised £140 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Doti said:

What a fantastic week all round. Students and staff worked extremely hard to organise a range of exciting events, as well as raising money for such a worthwhile charity. We have worked together throughout this year to raise awareness of the outstanding work that the charity does.

Coleg Menai's student union president Charlotte Till, along with Business student Ed Cucu, arranged a bake sale and a mental health quiz to raise both awareness and much-needed funds for the charity.

At the Rhos-on-Sea campus, Coleg Llandrillo's student union president, Jacob Jones, arranged a popular open mic session in the student lounge, which was a hit with staff and students alike. It was also an opportunity for the college's Music Technology students to showcase their technical and performing skills.

Staff and students from the Independent Living Skills department at the college's Dolgellau campus have arranged a Garden Tea Party which will take place later in May, in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. There will be games, raffles, cakes and drinks, all under marquees within Dolgellau's ornate gardens.

Sarah Wynn Griffiths, student enrichment officer for Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, said:

The students' union recently chose Macmillan Cancer Support as the Grŵp's charity for the upcoming year. Staff and students were brilliant, coming together to organise a range of inspiring and educational events.

During the last academic year, the student unions, along with staff and students from across all of the Grŵp's campuses, took part and arranged numerous fundraising activities to raise a whopping £5,000 for their chosen charities: Mind Môn a Gwynedd, Mind Aberconwy and Mind Vale of Clwyd.
