Nearly 100 innovative Grŵp Llandrillo Menai students created a wide range of Welsh-medium GIFs in a recent competition, which was part of the college group's initiative to increase the social use of Welsh.

The competition required students to create brand new Welsh GIFs on any subject to use with friends on social media. GIFs are a series of images or soundless videos that loop continuously. They are a popular file format and have recently become the default tool of web humour, alongside memes and viral videos.

Coleg Llandrillo's winner was announced as Kaity Clowes from Llandudno, who is enrolled on a Classroom Assistants' course at the college's Abergele campus. As well as receiving an Amazon voucher and a Welsh language poster, Katie's creation will now be published online.

Her GIF - "Beth S'yn Bod?"/"What's Wrong?" - which was inspired by her two young children, wowed the judges. The GIF is a character called Timon from The Lion King animated film.

Kaity said:

This is the first time I have created a GIF. I am truly amazed to win this college-wide competition. I really enjoyed the creative process from start to finish. I got the idea from home, where I am always saying the phrase to my two young children.

She originally entered the competition to cover a unit ('Welsh in the Workplace') from her qualification.

Her tutor Sian Cosgrove added:

Kaity is hardworking and conscientious and really deserves her accolade; she is a treasure.

Sioned Williams, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's bilingualism officer, noted:

The competition was organised as part of Seren Iaith's activities. Seren Iaith is an initiative to increase Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's social use of Welsh and to raise awareness of the Welsh language as a skill for work.

This is the second year that we have held the Welsh GIFs competition. It provides students with the opportunity to create digital and online content through the medium of Welsh. Technology and online content in Welsh is a core part of achieving the Welsh Government's vision of a million Welsh speakers by 2050. The competition has been extremely successful this year, and we have seen a huge increase on last year's entries.

Many thanks to Carwyn Hedd from Carw Piws for providing the prizes and judging the competition.

Carw Piws is a company that sells posters, cards, badges and other Welsh gifts. The company also creates Welsh language GIFs that can be used for free.
