A Hospitality and Catering student from Coleg Llandrillo is celebrating after claiming a medal at one of the UK's top student culinary competitions.

21-year-old Josh Price from Rhos-on-Sea scooped the bronze medal in one of a range of competitions recently held at Coleg Llandrillo, which have been organised annually by Association Culinaire Francaise for over 40 years.

The Level 3 student won the medal in the 'Rising Stars' competition for his skills in Irish coffee making and table layout. Other competitions on the day included the 'North West Commis Chef of the Year' and the 'North West Commis Pastry Chef of the Year'.

A delighted Josh said:

It is the first time I have won a medal in competition, so I am thrilled. The standard of the other competitors was extremely impressive.

Josh hopes to go on to study for a university-level course or get a job on a cruise ship.

Other finalists on the day represented colleges from across the whole of the north west region, including Blackpool, Manchester, Lancaster and Morecambe, Salford City and Wirral Met.

The esteemed competitions were held at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus after victorious Coleg Llandrillo student, Seb Wuster from Menai Bridge, scooped the gold medal and the title of 'North West Commis Chef of the Year 2018'. Fellow Coleg Llandrillo student, Sarah Davies from Llandudno, claimed the same title in 2017!

This year, Dalton Weir, 19 from Mochdre, narrowly missed out on making it a college treble with his menu of Potage de Poireaux et Pommes, Coq au Vin, Petit Pois a la Francaise, Pommes Parisienne.

Coleg Llandrillo Hospitality and Catering tutor Mike Evans, who is also the manager of the Wales national junior culinary team, said:

The fact that Josh won a medal is a testament to all his hard work and preparation. He is a credit to the college and I am sure that he has an exciting future ahead of him.

Sue Kenyon, President of Association Culinaire Francaise, said:

The students produced work of an excellent standard during the day's competitions. They gave the students the chance to show off their skills, as well as developing their confidence levels. They are all rising stars in my book.
