A short college course in partnership with Jobcentre Plus has already seen over a third of enrolees receive offers of employment!
The three-week 'Introduction to Hospitality' course saw nine unemployed people successfully complete two weeks of training at celebrity chef Bryn Williams' bistro - Porth Eirias - on Colwyn Bay's beachfront, before a final week at Coleg Llandrillo's Rhos-on-Sea campus, where they learned a range of culinary-based skills in its award-winning hospitality facilities.
The partnership qualification between Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and Jobcentre Plus provided students with a range of units within the course, including: food safety, allergen awareness, responsible alcohol retailing and first aid, which are all accredited.
Nigel Morgan, employment advisor for Jobcentre Plus (under the Department of Work and Pensions banner), said:
We really appreciate the support given from the college to our clients, which will greatly enhance their opportunities for progression into employment. We are already seeing some success stories.
College tutor Jayne Lloyd-Jones said:
It has been a brilliant partnership from start to finish. Many of the people who joined the short course are also interested in enrolling on further courses at the college.
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is a recipient of a Queens Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Award, which was presented in 2012 at Buckingham Palace for delivering world-class education in hospitality and catering at every level of study. In the recent Estyn government inspection, the college's hospitality and catering provision was classed as 'excellent'.
