Independent Living Skills (ILS) students from Coleg Llandrillo recently organised a charity 'Spring Bulb and Book Sale' at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus, where book-lovers and green-fingered staff and students alike were able to pick up a bargain or two.
Ten students - who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities and social and emotional behavioural difficulties - spent weeks preparing for the event: from the initial planting of the bulbs in their own college greenhouse, through potting-up, to the eventual sales.
They raised just under £100 in a two-hour break from their studies. The proceeds will go to St David's Hospice, as nine out of the ten students are involved in weekly work experience placements at the charity's shop in Rhos-on-Sea.
They sold a range of spring bulbs in pots, which included daffodils, crocuses, tulips and scillas. They also organised a tombola to add to the fundraising.
Their tutor, Mel Sampson, said:
They have worked really hard as a team: from the initial planting of the bulbs, to eventually selling them to staff and students in main reception. They really loved looking after the bulbs throughout the growing process.
