An engrossed crowd enjoyed a captivating demonstration of both traditional and radical hair designs, as Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students battled it out for medals at the Grŵp's annual grand final, which was held at Coleg Menai's Bangor campus.
Over 100 full and part-time students from across Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor campuses were involved in the many in-house competitions, including stylists, beauticians and models. Qualifiers had to battle it out in previous individual college heats for places in the final. Winners from the final will now be selected to enter both national and WorldSkills' competitions.
Students from the Rhos-on-Sea campus won a total of 18 medals, making it the overall winner and the holder of the shield for a year.
Hairdressing competitions ranged from gents cut and blow dry and block work, through hair-up categories ('A Night at the Prom' and 'Festival Hair'), to bridal and avant garde. Beauty Therapy students tackled tasks including nail enhancement, leg waxing, festival make-up and manicures.
Models' costumes ranged from wedding dresses to ice queen-inspired creations, complimented by associated hairstyles and make-up. The competitions provided the opportunity for students to demonstrate their creative as well as technical skills.
Over in the Beauty Therapy area, judges Sandra Jones and Scarlet Jones, were asked to score the students' performances and give them an insight into professional industry practices.
Frances Davies, customer services programme manager (FE) at Coleg Menai, said:
This multi-college competition was an opportunity for all Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students to show off their individual skills and talents. The standard of the competitions was very high and reflects the excellent skills that our students are being taught across Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's colleges.
