A striking hair design involving an electrical installation of festive lights has seen two Coleg Llandrillo students win a UK-wide online competition.

30-something friends, Rachel De La Hoyde from Llandudno and Natalie Jones from Old Colwyn were "absolutely delighted" to come first out of hundreds of entries. Both of the students are studying on the Hairdressing Level 1 course at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus.

The competition, which was organised by Habia (recognised by government as the standards setting body for the hair and beauty industries), provided the winners with a £100 voucher, and a brow kit from Gerrard International.

Rachel, who was previously a care worker for ten years, thought of the initial design concept, before asking her friend and classmate Natalie to create the design on Rachel's head.

Rachel said:

We were thrilled to win the competition, especially as it was open to everyone in the UK! I knew my competitive streak would pay dividends one day.

Rachel always wanted to be a hairdresser, and now that her daughter is in full-time education, she is fulfilling her dream.

Natalie, who made Rachel's creative ideas a reality, has a son with disabilities, so she too had to wait for the right time to return to education. Previously a supermarket worker, like Rachel, she had always dreamed of becoming a hairdresser.
