Some of the country's best young creative talent gathered in Bangor for a national competition recently.

Over 100 students from across Wales met for the final round of the Skills Competition Wales Creative and Media event hosted by Coleg Menai at the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre on Tuesday, January 22.

It saw ambitious students compete for the top Skills Wales prizes in photography, live music and digital video.

Coleg Menai Creative Arts Programme Area Manager Paul Edwards said:

It was simply fantastic to see so many creative young people gather in Bangor for what was an outstanding day of art and competition.

The creative and media category forms part of a network of over 55 competitions in different subject areas and industries under the Skills Competition Wales banner.

Almost every college in Wales made the trip to Bangor to compete in the event, with Coleg Menai serving as hosts for the second year running.

Coleg Menai TV and Film student Rolant Jones, age 17, won the bronze award for his short film Tair Cenhedlaeth about the different generations of a family running a farm in Llanfairfechan.

It was a good day at the races for Coleg y Cymoedd, who claimed the top prize in the digital video production competition for their film A Red Documentary, as well as the top prize in the popular music competition after a great performance by their band Hertz.

Katie Waite of Coleg Sir Gar claimed the top prize in the photography competition.

There were over 100 participants in the various competitions on the day and independent judges were sourced for each one.

Organiser Nia Rhys Jones said:

We were thrilled to invite all further education colleges in Wales to participate in the Pontio final event again this year.

It was great to see returning staff who had specifically asked if the same venue could be used again - they were so impressed - these are colleges as far away as Pembrokeshire and Gwent.

It was great to see the end results of months of hard work on behalf of the students and I am sure that many will use their entries to assist with their University entry or add the experience to their CVs.

Competitions are a great way to demonstrate how the students are stretched to demonstrate the best of their abilities and we are very proud of all of them.
