A Coleg Llandrillo Bricklaying apprentice is celebrating after being named apprentice of the year by one of the UK's largest housebuilders.

17-year-old Sean Williams from Abergele was recently crowned Redrow's 'Apprentice of the Year 2018' for its North West and North Wales division, at the company's inaugural national awards' ceremony in Leicestershire. He was selected from Redrow's North West division, beating off stiff competition from the finest apprentices from across North Wales, Cheshire, and parts of Merseyside and south Manchester.

Sean is currently studying for his NVQ Level 2 in Bricklaying at Coleg Llandrillo's Rhos-on-Sea campus on a day-release basis and is aiming to run his own business in the future.

The youngster, who is a former Emrys Ap Iwan School, Abergele pupil, has made a big impression whilst working at Redrow's Goetre Uchaf development in Bangor, as an apprentice bricklayer, and, in particular, helping to create feature walls for the housebuilder's iconic 'Arts and Crafts'-inspired Heritage collection.

Sean said:

I have always been interested in anything practical, as I am a hands-on person. My uncle is a bricklayer, so I got an early taste of construction; it's in the family. I am really pleased to have been recognised in this way by Redrow, and had a great night at the awards' dinner. I love going to college as I have learned so many new skills.

Sean's tutor, Jeff Price, said:

Sean always produces work of an excellent standard and no-one at college is surprised about his award. His is determined, talented and hard-working and deserves all his accolades.

As an apprentice, Sean has gained extensive and varied hands-on experience to complement his college studies, as he works towards gaining an NVQ Level 3 in Bricklaying. Now the young trainee has been rewarded with an award from Redrow acknowledging his "attention to detail and dedication to his craft".

Paul Cromby, area construction manager for Redrow Homes (NW), described Sean as an

ambassador for the industry,

adding,

the award is incredibly well-deserved, as we've all been so impressed by Sean's approach to his work.

Redrow's first ever national apprenticeship awards were recently held at Jury's Inn, Hinckley in Leicestershire, where Sean was officially named regional 'Apprentice of the Year' on the night.
