A Coleg Meirion Dwyfor lecturer has been offered a place on the Board of the prestigious National Network for Excellence in Mathematics (NNEM).

Ellen Wyn Jones, who teaches A Level Mathematics at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor's Pwllheli campus, was interviewed by four existing members of the Board at the beginning of September, and was offered the position shortly afterwards.

The aim of the NNEM is to support the development of effective practice in mathematics pedagogy across Wales for improved classroom practice, as part of a self-sustaining, self-improving education system. It provides a structured approach for mathematics support for 3 to 18-year-olds through a pan-Wales virtual collaboration of identified schools, higher education institutions and regional consortia

NNEM partners work together to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics and numeracy in education settings and colleges across Wales, primarily through supporting practitioners to develop enhanced classroom practice.

Ellen said,

I wanted the opportunity to be part of the national discussions about the Mathematics curriculum in Wales. This is an invaluable chance to work with other schools and colleges, and to discuss our subject in depth. It is essential for us as practitioners to play a part in the planning process, and to have an influence on what kind of education the children of Wales receive. I'm extremely excited and am looking forward to the challenge!

Coleg Meirion Dwyfor Principal Aled Jones-Griffith added,

We are extremely proud that Ellen has succeeded in becoming a Board Member of this prestigious  network. By having representation on the board, it will ensure that our learners benefit from the knowledge shared in Board meetings. It will also ensure that teaching strategies developed are commensurate with national developments, affording Grŵp Llandrillo Menai staff and learners access to the most recent and up-to-date teaching methods in Mathematics.
