Companies from the hospitality and leisure industries came together recently with learners from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and local schools for a 'Meet the Employer' event at Bwyty'r Gader, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

Approximately 160 students and pupils attended the event that was organised by Busnes@LlandrilloMenai, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's business support team.

For the employers this was an opportunity to recruit young people for permanent and seasonal part-time roles and talk about career opportunities in the sector.

Businesses attending included Ffestiniog and Talyllyn Railways, Dylan's, Harlech Frozen Food Services, Centre for Alternative Technologies, Seren Cyf, Plas Tagarth, Gwernan Hotel, Castle Cottage Hotel, Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Min Y Mor Hotel and Zinc Abersoch.

The number and range of businesses in attendance showed the young people just how many opportunities there are locally in the leisure industry.

Joshua Eardley was one of the students who attended the event. He commented:

It's been a very good event for me, I'm a hospitality and catering student here at Coleg Meirion-Dywfor and my interest is to go into a front-of-house or customer service role in the early summer when I have completed my course. Taking to the employers here today was a bit daunting at first, but it's opened my eyes to the opportunities locally.

Crofton Davey, from Harlech Forzen Foods attended the event:

This event has enabled us to engage with the college, students and pupils, not only to raise awareness of our company but to promote what the food and drinks industry has to offer, in terms of varied jobs roles and training opportunities.  I personally believe that we have a duty and a responsibility to support and engage with young people who are could be our future employees by raising the awareness of the sector, and to support the transition between education and business

The event was a great success with the companies attending treated to a delicious buffet laid on by the trainee chefs at Bwyty'r Gader who were eager to show off their skills.
