Information for Parents & Guardians

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai was established in 2012 when Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor joined forces. Our talented, award-winning tutors deliver courses across Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire and Gwynedd, and our mission is simple: to Improve People’s Futures by giving them the skills and qualifications they need to ensure success.

Across our three colleges, there are hundreds of full and part-time courses on offer to suit all interests and abilities. These include a wide range of vocational and academic subjects in more than 35 subject areas, and also apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities, making it easy for your son or daughter to find the perfect match. At AS/A Level alone, students can choose from over 30 different subjects.

The care, support and guidance provided by our exceptional learning support staff is sector-leading, having been graded by government inspectors as ‘Excellent’. You can be assured that your son or daughter will receive all the support they need to ensure their time at college is a success.

In recent years we have invested over £25 million in our facilities. A new Engineering Centre in Llangefni and investment in new virtual reality equipment at our Rhos-on-Sea Campus, are just two examples of how we provide our students with the best learning resources in Wales. Whichever campus your child chooses to study on, they’ll always have access to the latest IT and library facilities.

As a parent, you will receive regular reports about your child’s targets and progress from their personal tutor, including the opportunity to attend parent evenings. You can contact them at any time if you have any questions or concerns during your child’s time at college.

Current students tell us that the superb facilities, the support they receive from tutors, and the sense of achievement and independence they gain from studying with us all adds up to a fantastic college experience.

Whatever your child’s future aspirations, our goal is to turn them into a reality.

Why Choose Us?

Choosing to come to college rather than staying in school is a big step, but it will open doors that your son or daughter never even knew existed.

With a wider range of courses than most schools and access to specialist equipment and resources, college encourages young people to begin working and thinking more independently, better preparing them for work or further study at university.

At college, your child will have the opportunity to use facilities that they would be unable to access anywhere else. Our Engineering & Construction centres in Llangefni and Rhos-on-Sea, along with investments across all our vocational areas, provide industry-standard training facilities that exceed those offered by any school.

If your son or daughter has sporting aspirations, the Grŵp have a number of sports academies in rugby, football and netball that have produced exceptional players who have gone on to represent their countries.

College life will also expand their social network, bringing them into daily contact with thousands of fellow students of all ages from all corners of North Wales, and a number of international students from a variety of countries. This all makes for a rich and culturally diverse student experience.

Moreover, when your son or daughter needs to recharge their batteries, they will have access to a wide variety of excellent facilities, including libraries, sports centres, gyms and cafés.

Just as with school, attendance is compulsory and all learners are expected to act in a well-behaved and responsible manner.

The Grŵp has established a very strong positive ethos across its three colleges. All campuses offer a welcoming and highly inclusive environment.

Whilst studying at college, your child will benefit from access to state-of-the-art equipment and real-life working environments.

As well as being highly-qualified experts in the subjects they teach, many of our tutors have a wealth of experience from industry, in addition to their qualifications. Our tutors also win national awards for the quality of their teaching and support.

Year upon year, our colleges deliver outstanding results across the board:

  • In 2017-18, 93% of our Level 3 students leaving college progressed to employment, an apprenticeship or Higher Education
  • In 2019, our A-Level subject area recorded an overall pass rate of 97.5%, beating the Welsh average once again. Furthermore, over three-quarters of our students achieved an A* to C grade

Our colleges offer dozens of Level 3 courses, from BTECs to work-based NVQs and apprenticeships, in a range of subject areas. These courses are often a good preparation for degree-level study, as they encourage your child to improve their time management and self-organisation skills.

The vast majority of universities now accept a wide range of Level 3 vocational qualifications as alternatives to A-Levels, including competitive universities from the Russell Group. Whatever your child’s future goals, studying at the college puts them in the best place to succeed.

We believe that different individuals learn in different ways and that offering a wide range of vocational and academic subjects gives every one of our students the opportunity to excel and to shine. So, whichever qualification your son or daughter chooses, and whatever way they choose to study, we can help.

Students’ Union

We are fortunate in being one of the few Further Education Colleges to have a Students’ Union and are delighted to be able to say that ours has won the NUS Wales FE Students’ Union of the Year award in both 2018 and 2019.

Each of our three colleges has an elected Students’ Union President who represents the student voice and helps our Student Enrichment Officer organise various events and activities.

Throughout the year, there are many useful events that your son or daughter can attend, such as the Future Options Week, which lets students discuss their futures with professionals from Bangor University, Careers Wales and Student Finance Wales.

Students are also invited to take part in an annual ‘Learner Conference,’ which gives them the opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics face-to-face with senior management.

All our students following vocational courses are encouraged to take part in regional and national skills competitions. These competitions will allow your child to test their skills against the best students across the country, helping to build confidence in their abilities.

Through competitions such as Skills Competition Wales and WorldSkills UK, our students develop an excitement and passion for learning and, because industry experts design these competitions, those taking part gain the first-class skills needed to help UK businesses better compete globally.
