Is this course right for me?

This qualification is knowledge-based and is for experienced staff who wish to develop their leadership potential in order to progress to a leadership and management role within the Childcare sector. Being knowledge based, learners can complete this qualification before they have attained a leadership role. The qualification is suitable for learners who have successfully completed the following qualifications or recognised equivalents:

  • Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice
  • Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice
  • Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory
  • Legacy qualification listed in the Social Care Wales – Qualifications Framework for Social Care and Regulated Childcare in Wales.

Entry requirements:

This is a knowledge-based qualification for learners employed within the Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development sector. This qualification provides a ‘stepping stone’ opportunity for learners wanting to progress to Level 5. This qualification is primarily for those in paid or unpaid employment or who have access to a work placement, in regulated childcare settings with families and children under the age of 8 and NHS children’s services for those working with families and children 0 – 19. This qualification is designed for learners to develop the key knowledge and understanding that underpins leadership and management in the Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development sector. Learners are required to complete this qualification prior to taking the Level 5 Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice qualification.

Delivery:

Taught session, skills sessions including role plays.  Self-directed learning.

This course will be delivered over 1 full day for a full academic year.

Assessment:

The Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessment.

For the external assessment learners must successfully complete:

  • A project that contains a series of tasks based around a proposed change to practice

For the internal assessment learners must successfully complete:

  • A series of tasks, involving both oral and written responses

To achieve the Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification learners must achieve 60 credits in total. All units in this qualification are mandatory.

Feedback

Where relevant, assessments will be marked and returned to students with constructive and developmental feedback. Effective feedback combines information which enables students to understand the strengths and limitations of their past performance, and information which enables them to recognise how future performance can be improved. Students will be provided with feedback in a timely manner and this feedback will justify how the grade has been awarded. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the feedback given and identify their strengths, things they found challenging and areas for development that they will feed forward to their next assessment. Feedback will include linking evidence to assessment criteria to demonstrate how the student will have met the learning outcomes.

Progression:

The Level 4 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development provides the knowledge to help managers take their first step into a leadership role, and for progression on to:

  • FdA Childhood Studies
  • Level 4 Professional Practice in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development with Specialism.
  • Level 5 Leadership and Management of Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice providing the learner is in a suitable job role.
