Is this course right for me?

The course is appropriate for anyone with an interest in learning the basics in areas of analog photography and darkroom techniques.

During the 8 weeks of study you’ll be shown how to:

  • Use an enlarger.
  • Use a 35mm SLR camera
  • Load and process 35mm film. (If you have other BandW films to process then please bring them along and, time permitting, we will process them as well).
  • Black and white printing

The remaining time will be dedicated to printing individual work. Students will be shown how to produce basic black and white prints and how to use filter grades.

Learners will also be introduced to aspects of history of photography.


Entry requirements:

Enthusiasm for the subject and the darkroom process.


Demonstration, discussion and short presentations.


Assessment of coursework.


Further leisure courses from the short course programme or the pre-Foundation Portfolio course.
