Important Entry Requirement & Application Update

Once you've applied, you will be invited to attend a virtual information event at the beginning of 2021. At this event, you will have the opportunity to find out more about your course, meet the staff and ask any questions that you may have.

If your course requires an interview you will receive an email with details about your video call. There will be no need for you to come on site. Don't worry if you don't receive an email about an interview, not every course needs one.

Is this course right for me?

If you are looking for a career as a lorry or bus mechanic, or technician, and already completed a Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 1 course, then the Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy) Level 2 course is for you.

This Level 2 course helps you build on the technical skills and academic knowledge you learnt at Level 1.  The course focuses on practical, hands-on learning, delivered in realistic workshops. It brings your abilities up to an industry level and prepares you for a career as a lorry mechanic or technician.

In addition to attending the course, it is recommended that you gain work experience in a local garage.  Work experience is essential if you are to make the required progress in your vocational skills and progress to Level 3.

Entry requirements:

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • A Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at Level 1 (or equivalent)
  • Relevant industry experience

As part of the application process, you may be asked to attend an interview with the opportunity to discuss the course in more detail.

Delivery:

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following: 

  • Lectures and ILT to develop underpinning knowledge
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Realistic working tasks
  • Assignment work
  • Online and remote learning
  • Visits to Industry and Trade Shows

There are five workshops at the Llangefni campus equipped with the latest industry standard equipment for the diagnostics and maintenance of; cars, vans, lorries and trucks.  Equipment includes; 2 wheel rolling road dynamometer, fully equipped ATL MOT 4 poster ramp, laser 4-Wheel alignment, latest diagnostic scanners and lab scopes for Heavy and Light vehicles, hybrid rig, Autotronics Lab and Air-con facilities.

All staff are industry trained.

Assessment:

The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Internal practical assessment
  • Online assessment
  • Oral questioning
  • Written questions
  • Short learner task sheets for you to complete independently

Progression:

Completion of this course will give you the fundamental skills and knowledge to progress on to one of the following:

  • work as a lorry or bus mechanic or technician
  • apply for an apprenticeship
  • apply for the Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 3
