Is this course right for me?

Astronomy is the study of celestial objects such as stars, planets, comets, galaxies and phenomena that originate outside the Earth's atmosphere.

This course provides you with an introduction to Astronomy. You must be able carry out astronomical observations in your own time, in addition to attending the classes.

Entry requirements:

  • Basic numeracy and an enthusiasm for learning about Astronomy.
  • All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

Delivery:

This course will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • lectures
  • discussions
  • group activities
  • practical activities

Assessment:

  • one 2 hour exam (worth 75% of the final grade)
  • 2 pieces of coursework (25% of the final grade)

The coursework provides an introduction to astronomical observations. The observations will be done outside of class time at home or wherever is chosen.

Progression:

There are various online astronomy courses through LJMU and UCLan which can be taken. Other introductory courses are also available through our other campuses.
