Is this course right for me?

Are you hoping to start a career in hairdressing? Would you like to gain a range of professional skills in this sector? This course gives you the fundamental knowledge and skills for the traditional Junior role, enabling you to assist a stylist in the daily running of a salon or similar workplace. It can also act as a stepping stone to your Level 2 studies.

The course covers shampooing, drying, health and safety, reception work and other essential topics. It is an alternative to our Level 1 course in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, and is suitable for students who don't require the beauty therapy units.

Entry requirements:

  • 2-4 GCSEs at grade D 
  • Preference given to English and Maths GCSEs 
  • Other applicants with relevant experience may be considered 
  • You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn 
  • You must have a calm, caring personality and well-groomed appearance 
  • You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference 
  • You will be expected to purchase a hairdressing kit, book and uniform, costing approximately £270 (subject to change)

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

Delivery:

The course is delivered through a blend of the following:

Assessment:

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit 
  • Assignments and tasks 
  • Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge 
  • Your behaviour will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication

Progression:

The course gives you a qualification and a valuable set of skills, helping you to progress in employment and education. You could proceed onto a number of courses at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, including the City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing.

If you proceed directly into employment, you will be able to work at a junior apprentice level. You could also study part-time on the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing.

    Students at the Dolgellau campus will also study NVQ Level 1 in Customer Services.

  • Rhyl

    The course consists of the following units:
