Important Entry Requirement & Application Update

Once you've applied, you will be invited to attend a virtual information event at the beginning of 2021. At this event, you will have the opportunity to find out more about your course, meet the staff and ask any questions that you may have.

If your course requires an interview you will receive an email with details about your video call. There will be no need for you to come on site. Don't worry if you don't receive an email about an interview, not every course needs one.

Is this course right for me?

Would you like a career working with young children? Are you looking to develop practical skills in children’s care, learning, play and development? This course allows you to develop the essential skills of supporting the wellbeing and development of children. It is an ideal preparation for a range of careers, in schools, nurseries, healthcare and other environments, and underpins progression to further study.

This programme of learning is for all those who wish to work in the Children and Young People's Workforce in Wales. This Level 2 Children’s Core qualification has been designed for post-16 students in Wales, working or seeking to work in regulated childcare settings with families and children under the age of 8, NHS children’s services for those working with families and children 0-19 (this includes child health settings).  It will explore a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas for example, NHS, Youth Work and Early Years settings. You will focus on developing your understanding of relevant topics such as children’s learning and development, play, safeguarding, care and equality – taught by staff who are industry professionals.

Entry requirements:

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths, or Entry 3 / Level 1 ESQ in Numeracy and Communication
  • A relevant Level 1 qualification at Pass

Delivery:

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Practical sessions
  • Virtual Learning Environment (Online delivery)

Assessment:

The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Practical and written assessments/assignments
  • Presentations and demonstrations
  • Portfolios of work
  • Performance and observation
  • Internal Controlled Assessments
  • Online Multiple Choice Exam

You will also continue to develop a number of skills, including numeracy, literacy and digital skills, as part of the course.

Progression:

Successfully completing this course will give you the national qualifications required to register with the sector workforce. This will improve your employability and give you important knowledge and skills. You could apply for a Level 3 programme, or one of our work-based courses in childcare or health and social care which will further qualify you for a career in children’s play, learning and development. You could also use your skills to go into employment.
